Circumcision for Adults
There are a number of reasons why men may choose an adult circumcision procedure. Some require circumcision as a cure for conditions like phimosis (an overly tight foreskin) while others choose circumcision for cosmetic and personal reasons.
Featurs of our adult circumcision procedure include local anaesthetic, quick surgical technique, and skin glue closure.
No hospital visit or doctor’s referral is required, and all procedures are done here in our Vancouver clinic locations.
Please contact us anytime with your questions or to book a pre-surgery consultation.
Circumcision at Any Age
We are also often asked; “Am I too old to get circumcised?” and the answer is almost invariably “no”. Men and youth of all ages can have the surgery in our clinic. The most common age range for adult circumcision is 20 – 40 years old, but the procedure is regularly performed on a larger age range as requested for medical and personal reasons.
The medical team at Pollock Clinics is experienced at circumcising men of all ages.
Please contact us today with your inquiry.
The Adult Circumcision Process – Two Methods
Our team and our internal procedures are optimized to deliver care to men requiring circumcision.
We perform two methods of circumcision at Pollock Clinics – mogen clamp circumcision using the Pollock Technique™ and Shang Ring Circumcision. Both provide equally good cosmetic results.
With either method, you will receive detailed written instructions for post-surgery care as well as consult one-on-one with the doctor. Healing times are relatively the same.
Our doctors will determine which procedure will be best for you.
Our team is available after surgery as required to answer your questions and to react quickly should there ever be any problems.
Pollock Technique™ Circumcision
This method uses a combination of local anesthetic and quick surgical technique, with the mogen clamp and use of skin glue.
With the skin glue closure method, we have been able to obtain improved cosmetic outcomes without suture track marks in the mucosa and skin.
In addition, glue closure is faster than sutures.
Please contact us today for more information.
Shang Ring Circumcision
Shang Ring is quick, virtually painless and bloodless procedure also providing a sutureless circumcision without track marks.
This method was developed in China through the backing of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Our doctors have traveled to China to train in this technique and are the first Canadian doctors that we know of to offer this in North America.
Conveniently, dressing changes are not needed with the Shang Ring – and no skin glue is required.
The Shang Ring consists of two concentric medical grade plastic rings: an inner ring with a silicone band and an outer, hinged ring that acts as a ligature. The Shang Ring is removed after one week.
The advantages of the Shang Ring procedure may be benefits in your case, or our doctor’s may recommend Pollock Technique™ circumcision. In either case your procedure will be performed by an experienced doctor with a close follow-up post procedure.
Which Procedure is Right for You?
Our doctors will evaluate your case and determine which adult circumcision method is best in your situation. Both of our techniques will deliver a good result, and the decision will be made based on our physician’s experience and professional judgement.
Some patients have a preference but given that the end result is the same the recommended approach is to let the doctor decide the circumcision technique most applicable to your procedure.

Adult Circumcision Surgery
The details below provide an overview of how your surgery will be performed and what to expect afterwards. You will receive detailed written instructions for post-surgery care as well as consult one-on-one with the doctor who circumcises you.
Our team is available after surgery as required to answer your questions and to react quickly should there ever be any problems.
Before Your Adult Circumcision Procedure
The morning of your circumcision we recommend that you avoid coffee and other caffeinated beverages or stimulants. It is best if you are both physically and mentally calm.
Bring your headphones and listen to your favourite relaxing music on your phone or other small music player during the surgery. We can also play background classical music if you prefer.
Take it easy the night before
Do your best to have a good sleep the night before and follow your normal breakfast routine (except for minimizing coffee) so that you will feel your normal self. Some patients find it stressful to skip coffee and if you are one of those people who really need their coffee in the morning maybe just have one cup.
The goal is to minimize your stress, so have a cup of coffee if skipping it will cause distress. We recommend that the patient have someone come with them to drive them home as well.
The Surgery
The procedure itself will take about 5 minutes once the penis has been anaesthetized. You will be kept for observation for 2-3 hours after surgery, with a private recovery room.
We suggest you bring snacks and beverages for your comfort.
Follow-up is required the next day and 3 days after the operation for dressing changes and check-up.

Adult Circumcision FAQ
After the Procedure
Your penis may swell in the first 2 days. It is generally not very painful, and over-the- counter pain relievers are all you usually need.
You will have a dressing over the head of your penis for two weeks unless you have the Shang Ring (in which case you will have no dressings or dressing changes). Wear underwear that is comfortable for you. Some men prefer a snug fit for support, while others prefer loose-fitting briefs. The underwear should hold the penis upright. This will help the swelling go down.
You can return to work and your normal routine when you feel ready to. Some men return to sedentary work as soon as 2 – 3 days after circumcision. You will need to wait longer before returning to physical work.
A detailed care sheet will be provided with specific instructions to follow after your operation. The information on this page gives you a general idea about how long it will take for you to recover, but each person recovers at a different pace. Follow the care instructions to heal as fast as possible.
Your doctor will address your specific case and your detailed questions.
Post circumcision activity & care
Rest when you feel tired. Getting enough sleep will help you recover fast. You may shower when you no longer have a bandage on your penis, usually in 1-2 weeks. With ShangRing you can shower the next day.
Avoid strenuous activities, such as bicycle riding, jogging, weight lifting, or aerobic exercise, for 4 weeks or until your doctor says it is okay. You can return to work and normal activities, including driving, when you are comfortable doing them.
What to eat after circumcision as an adult
You can eat your normal diet. If your stomach is upset, try bland, low-fat foods like plain rice, broiled chicken, toast, and yogurt. Drink plenty of fluids (unless your doctor tells you not to).
There is no medical reason to change from your usual meals in the days after getting circumcised. You will likely prefer to eat at home at least for the first day or two to maximize your comfort.
Incision care
Remove any dressing when your doctor says it is okay. Do this by soaking it off in a warm bath.
Wear underwear that is comfortable for you. Some men prefer a snug fit for support, while others prefer loose-fitting briefs. Do what feels best for you.
Ice and elevation
Put ice or a cold pack on your groin for 10 to 20 minutes at a time. Try to do this every 1 to 2 hours for the first day. Put a thin cloth between the ice and your skin. Position your penis so that your underwear keeps it upright.
Medications after your circumcision
Your doctor will tell you if and when you can restart your medications. He will also give you instructions about taking any new medications.
If you take blood thinners, such as warfarin (Coumadin), clopidogrel (Plavix), or aspirin, be sure to talk to your doctor. He or she will tell you if and when to start taking those medications again. Make sure that you understand exactly what your doctor wants you to do.
Take pain medications exactly as directed. If the doctor gave you a prescription medication for pain, take it as prescribed. If you are not taking a prescription pain medication, ask your doctor if you can take an over-the- counter medication.
Do not take two or more pain medications at the same time unless the doctor told you to. Many pain medicines have acetaminophen, which is Tylenol. Too much acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be harmful.
Sex after adult circumcision
Do not have intercourse or masturbate for 6 weeks, or until your doctor says it is okay. An occasional erection is not harmful as long as you leave it alone. Do not stimulate the penis.
